Research on Transcendental Meditation
The scientific research on Transcendental Meditation is the largest and strongest body of research in the world on any programme to develop human potential. With more than 600 scientific studies conducted at 250 independent universities and institutions including Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, University of Chicago, UCLA, (America) and A.P. Sports council, Hyderabad, (India) in 33 countries. Published in over 100 of the world’s leading scientific journals including such leading journals as the Academy of Management Journal, Science, Psychosomatic Medicine, Hypertension, American Psychologist, and American Journal of Managed Care and proving benefits in every aspect of life.
A 5-year study in the U.S. found that people practising TM have 87% less heart disease and go to the doctor 74% fewer times than those who don’t do TM.
Other results include: increased alertness and creativity, decreased high blood pressure, improved memory and concentration, decreased anxiety and depression, increased self confidence, reduced fatigue, decreased headaches, better sleep, and improved problem solving ability.
Researchers have concluded that Transcendental Meditation enlivens the body’s inner intelligence, supporting its innate ability to heal itself. Here is a sample of the broad range of benefits confirmed by research and published in the world’s leading peer-reviewed medical and academic journals.
The National Institutes of Health in the USA have to date granted over $24 million to study the effect of Transcendental Meditation for the prevention and treatment of heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.
This research has so far reported :
- Reduced risk factors for hypertension, diabetes, and obesity (American Medical Association’s Archives of Internal Medicine)
- Increased lifespan (American Journal of Cardiology)
- Reduced thickening of coronary arteries (American Heart Association’s Stroke)
- Reduced blood pressure in comparison with other procedures (Ethnicity & Disease)
- Reduced heart failure (Ethnicity & Disease)
- Reduced use of hypertensive medication (American Journal of Hypertension)
- Improved brain response to stress and pain (NeuroReport)
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
The AHA has reported it as the only natural technique for lowering blood pressure.
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY
The ACC hosted a symposium on the research conducted at more than a dozen independent universities and medical schools on the effects of the TM technique for reducing heart disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, cholesterol, stroke, and heart failure.
AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
The American Medical Association’s journal Archives of Internal Medicine published a study showing that the Transcendental Meditation technique effectively prevents the risk factors for high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
During its annual conference last year, the American Psychological Association featured research on the TM technique that documents its positive, long-term benefits for self-actualisation and self-development.
TM Research Studies
A lifetime of benefits proven by over 380 original, peer-reviewed, published scientific studies, including: improved brain function, creativity & academic performance; better sleep; reduced
anxiety and stress; cortisol reduced by 30%; 48% lower risk of heart attack or stroke; 56% decrease in hospitalizations.
There have been 80 EEG research studies measuring TM’s impact on the brain. Each time a person practises TM, within a few seconds, the brain shifts to a highly coherent state of functioning. This increased orderliness in the brain improves concentration and learning ability, and results in more efficient, effective activity.
